More Features Thanks to the Latest Meta Quest 2 Updates—120 Hz, Air Link, and Media Syncing
Since the release of Meta’s Quest 2, software updates for the device have been released on an ongoing basis. Up until the most recent firmware update, many new software features as well as various hardware features have been unlocked and added to the VR headset—features that were not yet available at the time of the Quest 2’s release. Of course, all VR headsets available for rental from us always have the latest software versions installed. This means you can always take advantage of new features.
The most significant update—incredibly smooth VR performance thanks to the retroactive enablement of 120 Hz
The refresh rate of the two displays in the Quest 2 is a key factor in delivering a realistic experience. The rate at which the display refreshes—that is, how many times per second it generates a new image—is measured in hertz (Hz). The higher a device’s hertz rating, the smoother the content played on it appears. Until now, Quest models typically offered refresh rates of 72 Hz or 90 Hz. These hertz ratings already provide a very smooth and enjoyable VR experience.
But the jump from 90 to 120 Hz—as seen with the Meta Quest 2—takes immersion and the fun factor to a whole new level. To use this feature on the Quest 2, you’ll need to make a small change in the settings under “Experimental Features.” All apps that have been optimized by their developers for 120 Hz can then run directly on the headset at 120 Hz. The best news is that when streaming from a PC to the Quest 2, 120 Hz is supported and enabled by default. If you are considering a rental of a Meta Quest 2, you’ll experience picture quality at its finest.
A More Enjoyable Experience for PC VR Players — Wireless Streaming of PC VR Games Now Possible with Air Link
Streaming PC VR content and games was already one of the most popular features among VR enthusiasts when the Quest 2 was released. There’s a simple reason why this feature is so highly regarded: PC VR streaming combines the best of both worlds. Naturally, due to the higher processing power of PCs, the graphics of PC VR titles cannot be compared to those of games played internally on a standalone VR headset—which lacks a PC and relies on a built-in processor and graphics chip.
Wireless VR headsets offer the major advantage of freedom of movement. This sets it apart from the HTC Vive, Meta Rift, and others. The VR headset is powered by a built-in battery with a runtime of 2 to 3 hours. The system runs on its own operating system on hardware housed inside the headset. With the two ergonomic Meta Quest 2 Touch Controllers, your hands are projected into the VR environment, allowing you to move freely in three dimensions within the virtual world. More Power Thanks to a New Chip and More RAM
The first major innovation in the Meta Quest 2 was a new processor, or chip. It features a Snapdragon™ XR2 platform chipset from Qualcomm®, which offers more than twice the performance of the Snapdragon chip in the original Quest. The XR2 chip enables 2x better CPU and GPU performance, 4x better pixel throughput for videos, 6x better native display resolution per eye, and 11x better AI performance. This enables a higher resolution and a higher refresh rate of 90 Hz.
In addition, you can enjoy more graphically intensive games and apps, and the VR headset’s performance is generally smoother and more responsive. The RAM capacity has also been increased from 4 GB to 6 GB. The Meta Quest 2 is available for rental with storage capacities of 64 GB and 256 GB, ensuring there’s enough space for all your content.
Improved displays with higher resolution
The second major improvement: the advanced new displays. The Meta Quest 2 features two LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens, each with a resolution of 1832 x 1920 pixels. This means that during rental of the new Meta Quest 2, you’ll enjoy a full 50% more pixels than with its predecessor! This delivers an even sharper and more realistic VR experience while gaming. In addition, the LCD displays feature a full RGB subpixel matrix, with three subpixels per normal pixel instead of two.
This once again delivers an even sharper image and reduces the problematic screen-door effect, which was very noticeable on the first Meta Quest. As a result, the screen-door effect is almost completely gone on the Meta Quest 2, contributing to an even higher level of immersion. To round out the visual experience and make the VR headset suitable for use at VR events and trade shows, the Meta Quest 2 now supports a refresh rate of 90 Hz instead of the standard 72 Hz. Additionally, users can choose between 60 Hz and 72 Hz.
New Accessories for Optimal Headset Comfort
Although the first Meta Quest was already extremely comfortable, when you use the Meta Quest 2 for rental purposes, you’ll notice a difference in comfort above all else. For starters, the new Meta Quest 2 weighs just 503 grams, making it 10% lighter than its predecessor. The head straps are now made of elastic fabric instead of rubber. The temple arms are made of a durable plastic that houses the built-in speakers. They now sit closer to the ear and, thanks to positional audio, deliver excellent 3D surround sound. There’s still a standard 3.5 mm audio jack, so you can play with regular headphones as well.
To maximize comfort, Meta offers the option—exclusively for the Meta Quest 2—to order the Quest 2 Elite Strap, which further enhances the comfort and fit of the VR headset on your head. The Quest 2 Elite Strap also features an adjustment wheel that makes it easier to fine-tune the balance and fit of the VR headset. If you want the ultimate professional package, you can also order the Quest 2 Elite Strap with a battery and carrying case to enjoy even more usage time and improved ergonomics thanks to the built-in battery. The ergonomics of the Quest 2 Touch Controllers have also been improved, with each controller now featuring a thumb rest for added stability.
